Update: CSC President closes campus due to winter storm

Director of College Relations Alex Helmbrecht sent a campus-wide email that said CSC President Randy Rhine announced that campus closed at 10 a.m. today due to the winter storm and is scheduled to open again at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow. The snow was stopped around 11 a.m. today.

Rhine said that all classes, public facilities on campus, and Navy SEAL presentations are cancelled. The Student Center will stay open today so students have access to the food services. Dining Services Director Tracy Shuck said food services will observe regular hours except the cafeteria will close at 7 p.m. when the Student Center closes. The C-Store will observe regular hours tonight.

Teaching and Learning Technologies Associate Vice President Susan Hines said the library and Book Ends coffee shop closed at 10 a.m. today. Helmbrecht said the NPAC is also closed. Student Affairs and Student Activities Graduate Assistant Karl McFarlane said The Pit is also closed.

Senate President Katrina Hurley said she is working with the Navy SEALS to try to reschedule their presentations for tomorrow.

Maintenance Supervisor Todd Baumann said there are workers cleaning up the snow now and custodians are working in the Student Center and the dorms.

Junior Day was scheduled for 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. today. High school juniors are on campus today to take tours and learn more about Chadron State. Helmbrecht contacted Admissions Director Lisa Stein and she said that the juniors on campus could stay for lunch and tours or could leave. The majority of juniors are staying to eat lunch, Helmbrecht said.

Chadron is in a winter storm warning and is predicted to accumulate four to nine inches of snow until 6 p.m. tonight, according to the National Weather Service. Wind gusts are expected to be as high as 45 mph. Road conditions are expected to get worse throughout the day and travel is not recommended.
