Wetzel leads Eagles to win in SD

The CSC women’s golf team took first place at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Rapid City, invitational at Hart Ranch Golf Course, Tuesday.

As a team, the Eagles shot a 685, 339 in the first round and 346 in the second. Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South Dakota, finished second with a team score of 726.

The tournament, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, turned into a one-day, 36-hole round on Tuesday due to heavy snowfall Friday. Weather conditions were still chilly, but the Eagles powered through a grueling day to chart a 685 score, within CSC’s top 15 finishes ever.

CSC team captain, Schuyler Wetzel, senior of Hot Springs, South Dakota, also took medalist honors, shooting a two-round 163. Wetzel’s 17 pars and three birdies helped her capture the top spot. It was her first individual collegiate win.

“The whole team played well,” Wetzel said, “We are working on being more consistent and hitting the ball straighter.”

Four CSC golfers placed in the top 10 to help defeat three other RMAC teams, including Black Hills State University; Adams State University, Alamosa, Colorado; and South Dakota Mines. There were 33 competitors at the meet.

Individual scores for the Eagles: Wetzel, 81-82-163; Sam Rahmig, freshman of Gering, 83-90-173; Emma Harris, senior of Wahoo, 87-87-174; Mikayla Gallagher, sophomore of Lead, South Dakota, 90-87-177; Kelli Haynes, sophomore of Whitney, 88-93-181; Karson Langley, sophomore of Sidney, 96-107-203.

“I think we are all looking to improve our short game by the RMAC tournament,” Wetzel said. “Black Hills State is probably our toughest competition. Our goal is to beat them every time.”

The Eagles have one final meet at Fort Smith, Arkansas, April 11-12, before they compete in the RMAC Championships in Scottsdale, Arizona, April 18-19.
