Sign up & show up

The fourth annual The Big Event is set to kickoff at the end of this month. The staff of The Big Event has been preparing for this year’s event since October, according to The Big Event Adviser Shaunda French.

Last year’s event was considered a success by the staff but there was still an unexpected problem.

At least 100 volunteers who signed up last year did not show up to their job sites. A few of them met at the beginning of the event, picked up their free T-shirt and free lunch, and then didn’t follow through on the work.

The town of Chadron is a huge part of the success of the college. If the town didn’t work with the college and CSC’s students, we wouldn’t be able to have jobs off campus nor would we be able to live off campus.

The Big Event is our opportunity to thank the Chadron community for housing us, for giving us jobs, and for allowing us to eat off campus every once in a while, among other things.

You can sign-up to volunteer now until Friday. There’s a booth in the Student Center from until Friday, or you can sign up at https://www.csc.edu/thebigevent/volunteerapp/index.csc.

But before you sign up, really think about the commitment you are making. This is your opportunity to give back and really say thanks, but if you aren’t willing to do the work, you aren’t helping.

We’re sure there are people in the Chadron community who think the college students are just lazy, selfish, know-it-alls, and when we sign up to help people and then don’t show up, we are proving those people right.

So sign up, take a few hours one day out of the year and help make the world and town you live in a better place.

Do something selfless. Who knows, maybe helping that old lady downtown will result in a job, or a mentor. Maybe she’ll make you cookies or even put you in her will.

The people who sign up for job sites for The Big Event really need the help. Let’s band together Eagles, let’s sign up and show up to make the people of this town realize we really do appreciate all that they do for us.
