Spring: a time of renewal

Spring is the best season, for multiple reasons. First off, the environment is thriving. Everything starts to turn green, flowers bloom, and the outdoors come alive once again. Baby animals are born, and life continues its cycle. Finally, we gain some hope that winter is nearing an end. Here in Nebraska do we still get freak snowstorms? Absolutely. Unlike winter, however, usually the snow doesn’t stick and is gone in a couple of days.Melanie RGB

A lot of people say summer is best. But there is nothing like the excitement of the first sunny day in March. It may only be 40-50 degrees, but hey, we’re ready to break out the shorts and flip flops. These temperatures would have us shivering in the fall, but we are thrilled to see them in the spring! Finally we can put away the winter coats, and shed some layers.

Then comes a 70-degree day, and it’s tailgating time. It has been so long since we could grill outdoors or play some yard games that we actually appreciate the weather and get out to enjoy it. Hiking, frisbee golf, or whatever outdoor activity you fancy is once again a possibility. In the summertime, it’s just another day.

Sunshine every day is overrated. Every now-and-then a little rain is refreshing. You can smell it the instant you step foot outside, and search for the rainbow after the showers. Overcast skies with the promise of a lightning show can be just as satisfying as the sizzling summer heat.

Spring is also a big time for sports. Baseball season kicked off this week, and March Madness came to a close. The Masters tournament will be this weekend, the first of the four majors on the PGA tour. The NBA playoffs will begin April 16, followed by the NFL draft on April 28. No matter what your favorite sport is, there is something big happening during the spring to catch your interest.

Not only is spring a great season for these general reasons nationwide, but it is a fun time full of activities at CSC. After we get back from our week-long midterm break, it’s disappointing to return to classes. However, CSC always has a lot of events lined up to get students through the end of the semester. The Big Event and Spring Game gather a huge crowd of students each year to take part in a full day of service and entertainment. In the past, CSC has brought entertainers such as Rodney Atkins to put on concerts for the campus and community. This year a circus and carnival will be coming to town. The Nearly Naked Mile run and dance is one of the most popular of the year, where students get to make costumes, be silly, donate to a good cause, and win some cool prizes.

Above all, spring lifts our spirits. The school year is drawing to a close, which means summer break is right around the corner. We come out of our winter slump to warmer, brighter, and longer days. As nature comes to life, so do we, and that is why spring is the best season.
