Students climb the Tower of Power

Last week CSC presented its own version of the Tower of Power. Usually a Tower of Power is just a fun time for students to play games and relax with others. This Tower of Power featured all of those components but also showed people that The Big Event can be fun.
The event actually served as a recruiting tool for The Big Event staff who wanted to show the students that community service can have an upside.
“This year we are taking a new approach on getting people to sign up,” Maria Evtodieva, a senior of Syktyvkar, Russia, said.
The event featured a different game on every odd numbered floor throughout the High Rise dormitory and featured games that tested the participants in multiple ways. The only way they could advance to the next floor was to complete a floor and then receive a wristband.
The event was Wednesday, March 30, and started promptly at 7 p.m. and ended around 10 p.m.
On the ground floor of High Rise there were computers available for anyone who wanted to sign up for The Big Event, although it was not mandatory to sign up.
There were multiple prizes that could be won and they included Beats by Dr. Dre headphones and a fitbit. The prize winners were announced once every 30 minutes in a raffle-style draw, which gave everyone a fair shot a winning.
“The prizes are a good incentive to get people to sign up. The overall event put The Big Event in a positive light and helps to make community service more appealing to others,” Jessica Thiele, junior of Atkinson, who serves as the volunteer recruitment coordinator, said.
Around 55 people showed up for the event, with more coming in at the beginning of the evening and it slowly dying down around 9 p.m. This was the third year that CSC used the Tower of Power to help recruit students.
“The Tower of Power is a great event for the students with the goal of educating them about The Big Event along the way and hopefully getting more people to volunteer before the evening is over,” Shaunda French, faculty adviser for The Big Event, said.
She also plans to continue doing the Tower of Power for more years to come and believes this year’s event was successful.
