Eagles smash Yellow Jackets in 4-game series

Last weekend, the Eagles traveled to Spearfish, South Dakota, to play the struggling Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets. The Eagles won all four games against the Yellow Jackets. CSC had never swept a team on their home field before. The Eagles made quick work of the Yellow Jackets throughout the weekend only having one close game.

In the first game, the Eagles jumped to an easy 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to Zoe Humphries, junior of Arvada, Colorado, who homered to left field that allowed her and Courtney Letcher, senior of Fort Collins, Colorado, to score. Still in the first inning, Lindsey Karlin, junior of Berthoud, Colorado, hit a triple to center field, scoring Caroline Johnson, senior of Firestone, Colorado, and Katelyn Kruger, senior of Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

In the top of the second, Humphries stepped to the plate and hit a 2-run homer that allowed her and Rebekah Anthony, senior of Monument, Colorado, to score.

The Yellow Jacket scoring drought would continue until the third inning where they scored twice but remained scoreless the rest of the game, losing 6-2.

The second game of the day only got worse for the already struggling Yellow Jackets whose season has been nothing short of dismal. The Eagles not only ran up the score on the Yellow Jackets in the second game but Cierra Cosslett, senior of Grand Junction, Colorado, gave up just two hits.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, with Anthony hitting a single that scored Letcher. Kruger and Aspen Eubanks, sophomore of Broomfield, Colorado, both hit RBIs in the first inning to give the Eagles an easy 3-0 lead. The Eagles went scoreless in the next two innings but then unleashed seven runs in the fourth inning to give them a 10-0 lead. The Eagles went into the fifth inning and batted in two more runs to give them a 12-0 lead, enough to call the game after the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

The Eagles came into the second day already having two blowout wins and had no plans on losing. The Eagles once again jumped out to an early lead due to Humphries, who hit a single to right, allowing Letcher to score.  Kayla Michel, freshman of Brighton, Colorado, also made a play in the first inning that allowed Johnson to score giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead going into the second. The Eagles then scored in both the third and fourth innings gaining a commanding 4-0 lead going into the fifth inning. The Yellow Jackets were finally able to score a run in the fifth making the score 4-1 and the score remained that way until the seventh and final inning. The Eagles scored two more runs in the seventh, giving them the a five run lead, winning 6-1.

The last game of the series was the most suspenseful and was highlighted with defense. The score was tied at the end of the first inning, with CSC’s only RBI coming from a ground out to second base from Kruger ,which allowed Letcher to score. BHSU would quickly tie the score in the bottom of the first inning. Taylor Bauer, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota, hit a homer to left center field in the fifth which put the Eagles up 2-1 and was ultimately the winning run of the game.

The Eagles are scheduled to match up against Colorado School of Mines, Golden, at home at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday,  and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday.
