Voting is a responsibility

Student Senate elections are approaching, and so is the opportunity for students to give their input for the way that they think this student body should be governed. While it is disappointing that not a single student is challenging for the president position, that is no excuse to abstain from voting altogether.

Voting is easy. You can do it on your cell phone or you can do it when you need a quick break from studying. Just check your email for the link to follow. So log on, and become an active member of campus politics.

The best way to ensure that the student senators that will be appointed are capable and willing to better the college and keep the students’ interests in mind is to vote for them yourself.

Voting is more than picking between which flyers hanging around campus looked better. Student Senate makes decisions that directly affect students. From events that are put on each year to the ways that our student fees are spent, a good Senate can do a lot for our campus.

It is exciting that, as students, we have the opportunity to have a say in who has the deciding power over where our money goes and who can make significant changes to our campus. By not voting, we are giving up this power that we have.

Whether or not we choose to believe it, Student Senate makes decisions that directly affect us all. The most hypocritical thing we can do is complain about the decisions that are made, and then not vote to elect representatives that will make a difference in the way that our school is run.

There are many students running for office that have the potential to be great leaders, and we hope that as students on this campus, you care enough about the future of Chadron State to vote in this year’s election. And while Senate has made great strides in transparency and cooperation from years past, there is still work to be done. The best way to make sure that Senate remains progressive is to elect leaders that will keep the ball rolling.

Voting is not only an opportunity to help in the decision making processes on this college, but it is the easiest way to make your voice heard.
