Women break 5 school records
The Chadron State women’s track and field team led the way winning six events and setting school records in five of them at the Nature’s Bakery Invitational at Colorado School of Mines, Golden.
Stachia Reuwsaat, junior of Black Hawk, South Dakota, broke the women’s outdoor long jump record leaping 20 feet, 9 1/2 inches. The previous record of 20-3 was set by Reuwsaat last outdoor season. Reuwsaat’s jump came when she was jumping into a strong head wind. Her mark is an automatic qualifier for the D-II Outdoor National Championships in May.
The 4×100 and 4×400 teams both set school records and hit provisional qualifying marks. The 4×100 time clocked in at 46.52 seconds. The group consisted of Shelby Bozner, senior of Rock Springs, Wyoming; Kelsy Wood, junior of Hemingford; Tiffany Thomas, senior of Kingston, Jamaica; and Reuwsaat.
The 4×400 was no different, with the Eagles winning and another record falling. The relay consisted of Bozner, Wood, Thomas, and Sami Schmit, senior of Cody.
Bozner also shined individually winning the 100-meter high hurdles in 13.91. Her time is eight one-hundredths of a second faster than the previous record of 13.99 set by Tessa Gorsuch, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota, in 2015.
The fifth record for the women came from pole vaulter Angelique Urenda, junior of Pueblo, Colorado. Urenda won the event and added one inch to her school record clearing 12-1 1/2.
On the men’s side, no records were broken, but the men won three events and posted a number of season bests. Winners for the men were Zerek Jones, senior of La Junta, Colorado, in the 800; Kyle McCarthy, graduate student of Aurora, in shot put; and Skyler Hoopes, senior of Lusk, Wyoming, in pole vault.
Jones won the 800 running 1:52.11. McCarthy won the shot put throwing 52-9 1/2 and placed second in discus reaching 159-10 1/2. Hoopes cleared 16-2 1/2 in pole vault.
The Eagles will travel to Spearfish, South Dakota, next weekend to compete in the RMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 6-8.
