RLA opens renamed lounges

Two common rooms in the CSC dormitory complex were renamed this week. The grand opening of “The Landing,” formerly Kent Hall’s “Red Room,” was 8 p.m. Monday, and the “The Hub,” located in the Breezeway and formerly the “Gold Room,” was 7 p.m. Wednesday.

High Rise Resident Director Mariah Nelson said residence life staff and housing decided to rename the rooms at a meeting last spring. She said the change was past due, as neither of the rooms are painted red nor gold anymore.

RLA hosted the events and provided a fun evening for students to hang out. Monday night, students played board games, pool, ping pong, foosball, and shuffleboard. Chips, cookies, and soda were served, and students who signed in could also win

raffle prizes.

“We’re showing off what we have,” Nelson said. “It’s more like an open house.”

She said they used a $170 budget to buy prizes and refreshments from Wal-Mart for Monday’s event. Raffle prizes included a Chromecast, toaster oven, shelving unit, and DVDs.

Bingo was the highlight of “The Hub” grand opening, with a mini fridge as top prize. A $350 budget allowed for a few bigger prizes Wednesday night, and pizza was also served.

Along with the name change, “The Hub,” is featuring some new furniture. Housing and residence life spent about $8,000 on the leather chairs that are currently in “The Hub,” and coffee tables that will arrive mid-September, according to Austen Stephens, associate director of housing and residence life.

“The room is constantly being improved as it is a student lounge and programming space, but we just wanted to get the name change out across campus,” Stephens said.
