New Yorker breaks down stereotypes with humor

Comedians Rod Reyes and Bryce Stanley entertained students Monday night “In a giant, half empty ballroom on the wrong side of Nebraska,” in the Student Center.

Stanley, Reyes’ opener, took a few minutes to joke about his personal life. Opening with a statement about meeting a girl, getting engaged, then married, and within months, a divorce.

Reyes, a Puerto Rican comedian from New York, joked about the Midwest, racial stereotypes, and other mildly inappropriate subjects. The crowd was actively involved with the act, laughing along with the comedian.

He opened with how happy he was to see a few African Americans in the middle of Nebraska. He broke down racial barriers, making fun of Caucasians, African Americans, and Latinos.

Describing different states geography and topography Reyes pointed out that Angora is in need of a tip jar outside the town line.

He then asked if there was anyone attending from Texas, one male raised his hand. Reyes continued, saying that Texans are “just plain weird.”

Reyes also commented on the different type of entertainment that the younger generation enjoys, such as little people and music. He compared it to how his generation of “old people” view entertainment.

He spoke about how much music has changed over the century; how each generation thinks that the next style of music is garbage.

He mentioned a petition in New York to have equal opportunity employment in the fire department. Allowing little people to be employed as rescuers.

“Fire men need to be 6 feet 5 inches and 380 pounds,” Reyes said.

Reyes complimented the crowd on their participation and attendance. He also told them his reason for doing what he does is “the glamor.”

He mentioned that his agent wanted to get him an audition for a Viagra commercial. Enraged, Reyes pointed out the reasons he did not want to do that.

Approximately two-thirds of the chairs were filled for this event. Everyone in attendance appeared to enjoy the performance and was able to laugh freely at Reyes act. Reyes was grateful for having those in attendance, and closed with a “goodnight.”
