Senate unsure of total funds, makes allocations

Senate allocated $1,071 Monday and voted to confirm a $20,000 allocation from 2014, without knowing the total funds available to Senate for the semester.

Student Senate Vice President of Finance Curtis Stevens still didn’t have an exact number for Senate’s funding because student bills aren’t finalized yet. Stevens did report there was $4,000 carried over from last semester and Senate has already allocated $10,000 for the Book Ends Coffee Shop in the library, $8,000 for the Week of Welcome, $204,503.23 for clubs, and $20,000 for various speakers scheduled to come to campus.

Due to a miscommunication in 2014 an allocation of $20,000 for the Chadron Area Aquatics and Wellness Center was not recorded in Senate’s minutes. Therefore, Senate had to vote to confirm the allocation so auditors have a confirmation of those funds.

Senate allocated $100 for a movie, popcorn, drinks, and snacks for an outdoor movie night at 8 p.m. Sept. 9. The movie playing will be “Space Jam.”

Senate allocated $420 for supper at The Ridge on Sept. 24. All senators will have a group meeting to discuss Senate’s goals at 3 p.m. Sept. 24. Supper will follow.

Laure Sinn, B.E.A.M.S.S. and Rangeland program coordinator, was approved an allocation of $551 for Constitution Day. Because Constitution Day falls on a Saturday this year, there will be a celebration from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15. The money will be spent as follows: $450 for an iPad that everyone will have a chance to win, and $101 for red, white, and blue cookies.

Damian Mcalevy resigned his liberal arts senatorial position due to “conflicts in scheduling with meetings,” Mcalevy said Tuesday.

Senate approved the appointment of two at large senators: Olivia Vester and Johnathan Sayaloune.

There is now two Senate positions open: one liberal arts and one at large position.

Elections for dorm hall senators will open at noon Tuesday and close at noon Sept. 8. There were two students added to the court as temporary justices of the court: Nathaniel Brown and Kevin Zhang.

Petitions for the justice of the court are due at 10 p.m. Friday.

To acknowledge National Suicide Prevention Week Sept. 5-11, Senate would like to host a listening post and a meet-and-greet with the counselors on campus. Before checking with the counselors, Senate plans on hosting the meet-and-greet at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Student Center. Senate allocated $200 for hors d’oeuvres.

There will be an open forum at 7 p.m. today in the Student Center, but no Senate meeting next week.

CAB will be in the Student Center conducting surveys the rest of this week from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. today and Friday.

Senator At Large Anas Haddadi asked about hanging posters in academic buildings. Mathew Brust, Senate adviser and physical and life sciences associate professor, said in order to hang posters in academic buildings, you have to contact the building manager to get permission. 

Student Trustee Coy Clark said that there is a trustee’s Facebook page now up titled “Chadron State Student Trustee.”
