Men’s rodeo team starts circuit on top

The Chadron State men’s rodeo team started the fall Central Rocky Mountain Region circuit strong this weekend in Chadron at the Dawes County Fairgrounds placing first with 530 points, putting them in the lead of the region. CSC was followed by the Sheridan College men’s team, who racked up 510 points.
Casper College’s women’s team took the championship title with 245 points followed by Sheridan College with 205 points with CSC coming in third with 196.67 points.

Ten CSC contestants placed in the top six of their events. Elsie Fortune, senior of Interior, South Dakota, led the women’s team, capturing the championship in breakaway roping with times of 2.7 seconds and 3.2 to put her at 5.9 on two; while Cordale Martin, junior of Panhandle, Texas, won the bull riding average with a score of 83 points on his long-round bull and a no-score in the short-go.
“I knew I just had to make another clean run (going into the short-go),” Fortune said.
Both Lane Day, graduate student of Bartlett, and Prestyn Novak, junior of Newell, South Dakota, placed in the tie-down roping, third and sixth, respectively; and steer wrestling, sixth and third, respectively. Novak placed second in the all-around cowboy standing, followed closely by Day who placed third all-around.
Other place-winners for CSC were Chasen Cole, junior of Hermosa, South Dakota, third in the bull riding with a score of 73 on
his first bull and a no-score on the second; Sam Boldon, senior of Oglala, South Dakota, fifth in the team roping heeling going 9.5 in the long go and 19.3 in the short go for a time of 28.8 on two. Cole Retchless, freshman of Bridgeport, finished fifth in the steer wrestling with an 8.6 and a 9.7; and Brandi Cwach, junior of Geddes, South Dakota, went sixth in goat tying with an 8.2 and 8.0.
“I’m excited for the rest of the season,” Fortune said. “We are off to a great start and I think as a team we have a great opportunity to excel this year.”
The next rodeo in the Central Rocky Mountain Region will be this weekend, Sept. 23-25, at Sheridan College, Sheridan, Wyoming.
