Senate’s first open forum makes little progress
Student Senate president Katrina Hurley hosted a 14-minute open forum Thursday to discuss three main topics with students.
Hurley said at the first Senate meeting of the school year that Senate would be hosting an open forum every week this semester, but this was the first meeting of the school year.
Hurley hosted the meeting to hear students’ opinions on three topics: teacher excellence award nominations, Free Movie Night allocation for Sunday, and CAB allocation for the semester.
Hurley suggested Student Senate put their support behind nominating Kurt Kinbacher, social and communication arts associate professor, for the NSCS Board of Trustees Teacher Excellence Award for next year. Other names thrown out to nominate were Lisette Leesch, justice studies professor, and Philip Cary, mathematical sciences associate professor.
Hurley also wanted to hear students’ opinions on a $2,232 allocation for Free Movie Night hosted Sunday. The only discussion on that allocation was a question about why “Now You See Me 2” was playing when that movie is out on DVD already, but no solution was made for that. There was an online Senate vote on Friday for the movie night allocation that passed unanimously.
There were no comments on the CAB allocation of $16,428 for the semester.
When two students, who weren’t senators or the student trustee, arrived at the forum, Hurley asked for situations that the students wanted fixed on campus. Amid jokes of “wanting girls to show more skin,” the students suggested dining services needed improvements. The students suggested things like less experimentation and joked about having a Hooters.
