ASU wins special teams battle, earn 1st win
The CSC Eagles football team dropped to 1-3 Saturday, after losing to Adams State University, Alamosa, Colorado, 31-30.
Adams State, who recorded its first win of the season against the Eagles, is also 1-3 on the season after Saturday.
The Eagles never lost the lead until the 7:48 mark in the fourth quarter when Addie Brown, senior running back of Denver, ran for a 91-yard punt return to put the Grizzlies up by one.
Brown earned the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week title after his Saturday performance.
The Eagles had a chance to put themselves back on top after an interception at the 2:23 mark in the fourth quarter, but failed when the 24-yard field-goal attempt from Will Morgan, freshman of Fort Collins, Colorado, at 3 seconds remaining missed wide to the right. Morgan connected on his first attempt against Adams State in the first quarter from the 41-yard line.
“For reasons unclear to me the (starting) spot opened up,” Morgan said. “I originally planned on redshirting this season but I also always planned on doing what was best for the team.”
Morgan is 1 of 3 in field-goal attempts in his college career with the one other failed attempt against Western State Colorado University at home on Sept. 17.
“Going out on the field (for that last attempt) I was just telling myself no matter what happens I know the team has my back,” Morgan said.
CSC led in all categories at the end of the game, including 25 first downs to ASU’s 19, 447 yards of total offense to ASU’s 126, and 16 penalties for 166 compared to ASU’s three penalties for 25 yards. CSC also controlled the ball for almost a full 10 minutes longer than ASU.
CSC quarterback Matt Vinson, junior of Box Elder, South Dakota, connected on 25 of 34 for 222 yards. ASU’s quarterback Stetson Stallworth, freshman of Yuma, Arizona, who had only thrown one pass in his college career prior to the game, only tallied nine out of 17 for 84 yards, while marking four sacks against him and one interception.
Vinson’s main targets were Max Gray, redshirt sophomore of Arlington, Washington, who grabbed seven for 63 yards, and Matt Reader, redshirt sophomore of Appleton, Wisconsin, who snagged three for 64 yards.
Stallworth hit Chad Havasse, redshirt sophomore of Colorado Springs, Colorado, three times for 48 yards.
Leading rushers in the match up were CSC’s Kevin Coy, redshirt sophomore of Davenport, Florida, and Derek Jackson, junior of Pueblo West, Colorado. Coy carried 14 times and Jackson 16 times for 91 and 71 yards, respectively.
But ASU’s Corey Brown, junior of Peoria, Arizona, led all rushers, running for 120 yards on 26 carries.
Saturday, the Eagles return to Elliott Field to take on Humboldt State University, Arcata, California. HSU is 2-2 on the season. HSU has been nationally ranked in the American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Poll but recently dropped out this week. ASU’s quarterback Robert Webber, junior of Corona, California, was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week this week, for the second time this season.
Webber completed 44 of 64 for 502 yards Saturday during the home loss. He also tallied four touchdowns in the game. Webber’s 502 passing yards is a GNAC and program record and his season passing total is a conference record: 1,321. He has 4,431 yards in his career.
Kickoff is set for noon and this week’s game will be the Hall of Fame game.
“I have just been working more on the things I struggled with in Saturday’s game (to prepare for this week’s game) and trying to find ways to get my mind right for those times when adversity arises,” Morgan said.
