Eagles trample NMHU, 73-0
Five CSC running backs found the endzone during the Eagles’ 73-0 rout of New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, Saturday at Elliott Field.
The Eagles have not shutout an opponent since last season against Fort Lewis College, with a modest score of 26-0. It was also the highest scoring game for CSC since 1994, when the Eagles beat Tabor College, 74-0.
The Eagles put up 473 rushing yards against the Cowboys, and nine rushing touchdowns, pushing their record to 2-5, 2-4 in the RMAC. The Cowboys are winless on the season with seven losses.
Of the five backs to score, redshirt freshmen Stevann Brown, of Casper, Wyoming, and Priest Jennings, of Stockton, California, ran for more than 100 yards. Brown recorded 115 yards and two touchdowns, while Jennings gained 100 and one score.
Veteran backs Derek Jackson, junior of Pueblo West, Colorado; Cody Paul, senior of Seal Beach, California; and Kevin Coy, redshirt sophomore of Davenport, Florida, each added two touchdowns to the board.
Paul added a third touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a 70-yard punt return, his second punt-return TD of the season.
Matt Vinson, junior of Box Elder, South Dakota, threw for 105 yards on seven completions.
Placekicker Will Morgan, freshman of Fort Collins, Colorado, split the uprights with a 35-yard field goal and was a perfect 10 of 10 on extra point attempts.
The Eagle defense held to just 225 yards of total offense, 89 rushing. On one of the few scoring opportunities for Highlands, kicker Luke Jones, junior of Macclesfield, Australia, missed a 46-yard field goal attempt with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game.
Early in the second quarter, on what looked to be a promising drive for the Cowboys, CSC defensive back Joey Hopkins, senior of Burien, Washington, intercepted a pass from Cody Kieth, senior of Charlotte, North Carolina, and returned it for 39 yards. Hopkins also added seven tackles.
Zecharie James, junior of Hampton, Virginia, led the Eagle defense with 10 tackles. Truett Box, junior of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, dominated in the trenches, recording two sacks of the team’s four.
The Eagles will play their closest road game Saturday, against South Dakota School of Mines, Rapid City. The Hardrockers are 5-2 overall, 4-2 in the RMAC.
