2 clubs open mic to students

The Pit’s first Open Mic Night of the year was Thursday, Oct. 20, while Sigma Tau Delta, an honors club for the department of English and Humanities, hosted its second Open Mic Night of the year Monday. From Beyoncé and Justin Bieber, to Edgar Allen Poe, the two clubs kept the crowd entertained.
The two events had different styles. The Pit’s Open Mic Night showcased multiple individuals performing popular pop songs that were familiar to the audience, while Sigma Tau Delta allowed individuals to perform their favorite poems and fairy tales.
About 30 people showed up to both events, with people coming and going throughout.

Sigma Tau Delta’s event was designed to be slam poetry, and the goal was achieved.

“A lot of thrillers and frightening poetry was read, which is how slam poetry is supposed to be”, Mary Anne Johnson, 21, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Sigma Tau Delta member, said. “The turnout was way above average, it was great to see so many people.”
Instead of being filled with fear, The Pit’s Open Mic Night was full of laughter.
While some performers decided to slow it down, the majority decided to be up-beat and involve the crowd.
Whether it be from Brooklynn York, 18, freshman of Denver, performing multiple songs from Beyoncé’s new album “Lemonade,” or Katie O’Boyle, 20, junior of Gering, singing “Oh Happy Day” by Edwin Hawking Singers, the crowd was laughing all night long.
“It was fun to have the crowd sing along with me while I was performing”, O’Boyle said. “‘Oh Happy Day’ is one of my favorite songs, and singing it in front of a great crowd, made it that much more enjoyable.”
Tonight, The Pit will be hosting a Halloween dance in the Student Center Ballroom. The event is from 9 p.m. until midnight, be sure to wear your costumes!
