Learn a lesson from this year’s election
In five days, America votes. America will select the next president of the United States. We have only five days. In five days, either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton will win the presidential election. Isn’t that funny; isn’t that simply hilarious that one of these ridiculous candidates will actually be leading our country?
It was maybe funny when the election season started and Deez Nuts was allowed to register as an independent presidential candidate and was actually on the polls. It was maybe funny when Twitter exploded with jokes of Trump actually becoming president, and it was maybe funny when jokes were made about Clinton’s dishonesty.
But suddenly, the joke is on us and it is not funny anymore. The reality is that we have to now vote for one of these ridiculous candidates to run this country because we are out of time and out of options.
In elementary, adults tell us that we can be anything we want to be when we grow up, and if we set ourselves on the right track, I believe we can. And many of us dream to be president of the United States when we are young, but once we reach the adult stage of our lives, we realize that job is not open and appropriate for everyone. And these candidates showcase that.
So, it is not going to be easy to decide which box to check on Tuesday. It will not be easy because all of the candidates have major flaws this year. We do not have a saving grace from any of the candidates.
And getting educated about the candidates is not going to be any easier than actually picking one. And that, we can credit to the fact that Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and memes crowd the Internet. Trying to weed through the jokes, funny videos, and hilarious memes online to get to the real information about the candidates is difficult and distracting, because yes, they are funny. But what is more important, the video remix of Trump saying wrong at the debate or the actual issues that Trump and Hillary debated on? From what I have witnessed on social media, the funny things are sent around much more often and much easier.
It is a joke that we have to work through all the clutter and memes to make it to the real substance. Social media is a great resource and it is a way to share thoughts, have discussions, and you can use social media to benefit you, but that is not what we did this election season.
We, as citizens of America, made this entire election a joke. We can and we probably will blame the candidates, but we did this. Americans allowed these candidates to make it this far and we allowed the issues to take a backseat to the jokes. That is on us.
I just hope and pray every day that America is strong enough to survive these next four years with one of these knuckleheads in office, and then I pray even harder that Americans will not allow this to happen again.
In the next four years, let’s take a step back from the jokes and start looking at the seriousness of the election. Look at the fact that we need someone honest, genuine, and appropriate leading this country, and not allow jokes and being funny to take control of the election in the next four years.
Other countries of the world are laughing at us now, and our punishment for being funny is these candidates; let’s not do this to ourselves again, America.
