Chadron State College men’s basketball team traveled to Torrington, Wyoming, to take on the University of Wyoming, Laramie, Thursday, Nov. 3, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln Monday to play in exhibition games. Both UW and UNL are D-I schools.
Results of the exhibition games do not count toward either team’s regular-season record, but can prove valuable for various reasons. For the D-II Eagles, playing D-I opponents, such as the Cowboys and Huskers, gives the team experience against tough competition and in larger facilities, media coverage, and the chance for first-year Head Coach Houston Reed to identify the team’s strengths and weaknesses.
“We learned a lot about not just us as a team and what plays we should run, what sets we should be in at certain points and time in the game, or against certain kinds of defenses, but who we are as players as well, and what we all need to work on individually in order to be better for our teammates and program,” Bronte Corbray, junior of Seattle, said.
In addition to the gained experience, D-II schools receive a check that is added to their budgets.
With the eight eligible recruits Reed signed this summer, seven returning Chadron State players, and a new head coach, the team and individuals have an opportunity to step up into new roles and adjust accordingly between the exhibition games and the regular season set to begin 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bellevue University, Bellevue.
“Coach Reed is a great coach and I know he realized a lot about our team and our identity as well,” Corbray said. “I expect to see a fair amount of success this year simply because of how well our team has come together with all the new pieces and such in the short time that we’ve had together this year.”
