Women’s basketball team loses to Wyoming 74-50
In Janet Raymer’s head coaching debut, The University of Wyoming Cowgirls (1-0) outshot Chadron State (0-1) in all categories Friday night on their way to a 74-50 victory over the Eagles.
After Erin Graham, senior of Deland, Florida, made a jumper 13 seconds into the game for the Eagles, the Cowgirls answered by making four three-pointers in a row of their 13 total to hold the lead for good.
The Eagles came within two points midway through the second quarter and entered halftime only down by seven, but after being outscored by 16 in the third quarter, the game was put out of reach.
“Wyoming came out more aggressive on offense and defense in the second half than they did in the first,” Kalli Feddersen, junior of Rawlins, Wyoming, said. “They executed when they had the ball and got major stops on defense.”
The Cowgirls came out strong in the second half hitting 50 percent of their shots, including five more three-pointers, compared to the Eagles 34 percent.
The Eagles outshot the Cowgirls 42 to 36 percent in the first half, but were hurt by their seven first-half turnovers.
Graham led all scorers with 20 points, being the only double-digit scorer for the Eagles, while shooting 50 percent from the field and grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
Kylah Collins, redshirt freshman of Waukegan, Illinois, added nine points and five boards for the Eagles, while Maddie Metzger, senior of Georgetown, Texas, provided seven points and five rebounds.
Clara Tapia, sophomore of Barcelona, Spain, led the Cowgirls with 18 points and four three-pointers. Rachelle Tucker, sophomore of Pierce; Liv Roberts, junior of Missoula, Montana; and Hailey Ligocki, senior of Sheridan, Wyoming, all finished in double digit scoring for the Cowgirls.
“The Wyoming game helped us learn what offenses worked for us and what ones didn’t,” Feddersen said. “We are going to try to focus on perfecting our zone defense and not let teams get as many open shots against us.”
The Eagle’s next game and home opener is Friday, Nov. 25 in the Chicoine Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
