Stay fit this holiday season

Students, faculty, and staff received tips on how to stay “Healthy for the Holidays” during an open house that attracted just under 50 attendees from 7-9 p.m. Thursday in The Hub.
Courtney Munger, 22, junior of Newcastle, Wyoming; Kate Chesterman, 20, junior of Bertrand; BriAnn Straub, 21, senior of Scottsbluff; and Stephanie Wilson, 21, senior of Albuquerque, New Mexico, provided students with information on exercise, fitness technology, apps and tracking programs, and tips on how to handle cravings during the approaching holiday season as part of a creative project for the Weight of the Nation capstone course.
“Our goal for this project was to educate students on how they can live a healthier lifestyle, especially during the holidays,” Munger said.
Muger presented a slideshow as she educated the audience on popular exercise technology, and health and fitness apps and programs including Apple Health, the Apple Watch, Daily Yoga, Fooducate, ShopWell, P90X, Wii, Insanity, Fit Bit, Couch to 5K, Zombies, Run!, Map My Run, Fitnet, and My Fitness Pal.
Wilson, an exercise science major, showcased a list of the many places to exercise in Chadron. The list consisted of 19 different venues that are open to students ranging from Curves and Zumba to sledding and cross-country skiing.
The group also prepared a spread of favorite holiday dishes including turkey, a pork loin, green bean casserole, sweet potato fries, and apple cranberry casserole to persuade that holiday cooking can be both healthy and tasty.
“Coming from the athletic community, it is important to show people that there are easy and healthy ways to eat during the holiday season,” Wilson said.
The event was funded and sponsored by the Residence Life Association.
