The ‘Wheel’ visits CSC
The Chadron State College Residence Life Association hosted its first-ever “Wheel of Fortune” game night event at 9 p.m. Friday in the Hub, adding to the RLA’s list of game-show themed events.
Yadira Gurrola, a 22-year-old graduate student of Scottsbluff, was the RLA member who arranged the event. She modeled the game after the famous “Wheel of Fortune” game show hosted by Pat Sajak and Vanna White. For the event, sequences of typed letters were hidden behind pieces of paper and hung on a sheet of plastic to form a word puzzle. Junior Courtney Munger, 20, of Newcastle, Wyoming, played the part of hostess Vanna White and was responsible for revealing the letters of the word puzzle as contestants guessed them. Sophomore Colton Molcyk, 20, of McCook, acted as Pat Sajak, the game show host.
Three teams of two contestants, whose names were drawn at random, took turns spinning the Wheel of Fortune for points, after which they guessed individual letters, then words and phrases, until the puzzle was solved. The event was divided into different games, each with multiple rounds. The rounds included a quick round, where Munger removed letters at random until a contestant sounded a buzzer and guessed the puzzle, a normal round where players gradually guessed the letters on the puzzle board until it was solved, and a final round. The winning team of each game received gift cards.
Gurrola was inspired to create the event by the popularity of other game-show themed RLA events like “The Price is Right” on campus. RLA provided soda, water, popcorn, chips, and other snacks. The hosts of the event also gave out several door prizes as the evening progressed, such as pillows, candy, DVDs, speakers, laundry detergent, headphones, and a blanket. Around 50 people attended the game show event.
