PR Club explores careers in communication

Extending their professional networks, eight members of the CSC Public Relations Club experienced professional opportunities on the 2016 Careers in Communications trip to Omaha and Lincoln.
Members toured the TD Ameritrade Park, the Century Link Center, the Omaha World-Herald and learned from public relations professionals at the American Heart Association and the Henry Doorly Zoo. Passes from the CSC Alumni office enabled the trip participants to cheer on the Eagles men’s basketball team at the UNL vs. CSC exhibition game.
“Overall this trip was a great opportunity for anyone wanting to get into the world of communications,” Shae Brennan, 21, senior of Alliance, said. “We got to talk to professionals in diverse working environments and create a relationship with them that can help us in the future.”
Touring TD Ameritrade Park and the Century Link Center provided a learning experience about daily responsibilities from the director of communications for the Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority. Hosting events like the College World Series, the USA Olympic swimming trials, sporting events, weddings, and various other events showed students that the MECA director of communications has diverse daily tasks.
Sitting in the “news huddle,” Omaha World-Herald’s daily editor’s meeting, imparted real-world negative reader feedback and how to professionally respond. The “news huddle” depicted a typical day for students interested in journalism. CSC students had the opportunity to explore the production side of the newspaper business at the state-of-the-art printing facility at the Omaha World-Herald John Gottschalk Freedom Center.
Professional opportunities did not end at the Freedom Center but continued for students at the UNL vs. CSC exhibition game. Three public relations club members seized the opportunity to shoot photos at the game and use the professional media room of the Huskers. The other trip participants cheered on the Eagles in the Pinnacle Bank Arena.
“I grew up watching Nebraska Athletics,” Megan O’Leary, The Big Event Graduate Assistant of Omaha, said. “So it was really cool to see CSC play on that stage.”
