No students attend Senate open forum to voice opinions

Three senators—Carly Slaght, Teryn Blessin, and Denae Schillings—Senate Secretary Olivia Vester, and Senate President Katrina Hurley mentioned three topics at an open forum hosted Thursday in the Student Center to hear students’ opinions on issues.
No at-large students attended and there were no comments on the Facebook Live video.
Hurley explained that Senate passed a majority of the 30 proposed bylaw changes at the Monday, Nov. 28 meeting, and they will be voting on the last few at Monday’s meeting. Please see related Senate story on page 3 for details on the vote.
The only comment during the forum came from Blessin who said the proposed change that would make it mandatory for senators to serve on at least one committee should be passed to make sure senators are taking an active role on the Senate.
The second item on the agenda for the forum was the Christmas Tree Giving event. Hurley said the silent auction started Monday and would last until this upcoming Monday. There will be a Christmas party from 4-5:30 p.m. Monday to give the trees to the person who bid the most.
The final item was a letter sent to CSC Senate from Wayne State Student Senate asking for support in changing the Nebraska State College System’s Policy 2000 to allow Student Trustees the power to vote on the NSCS Board.
“The Wayne State College Student Senate requests, with the support of the Chadron State College Student Senate and the Peru State College Student Senate, that the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees amend policy 2000 to explicitly guarantee voting power to all future Student Trustees,” the letter states.
The letter explains that because the NSCS is partially funded by students’ tuition, the students should have “legitimate representation on the Board of Trustees and in all executive sessions.”
The open forum lasted 11 minutes.
