The women’s basketball team allowed two home games slip away from them at the Chicoine Center last weekend. The two losses hurt the Eagles playoff hopes, which were already a long shot due to their 6-12 record going into the weekend.
“We played hard both nights and did some really good things on both sides of the floor,” Keeley Pearce, sophomore of Adelaide, Australia, said. “But we need to find a way to score the ball more efficiently.”
The Eagles started the weekend with a loss to Colorado Christian University, Lakewood, 77-68. Both teams came in with records under .500 but still had a chance to get into the RMAC playoffs if they picked up enough wins during the remainder of the season.
The Eagles defended and scored the ball well in the first quarter, and pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Cougars by three points to give CSC a slight advantage going into halftime. The Eagles came out in the second half and commanded the lead until the fourth quarter when they let the game slip away, being outscored 28-14.
Kalli Feddersen, junior of Rawlings, Wyoming, led the Eagles with 16 points on 4-15 shooting from the field and 3-7 from the 3-point line. Kylah Collins, redshirt freshman of Waukegan, Illinois, led the Eagles in rebounding with 13.
The second game of the weekend was against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers, Golden. The Orediggers pulled away in the second half en route to a 84-73 victory.
The game started off close with the score tied at 17 after the first quarter, but the Orediggers slowly started to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring the Eagles 25-17. The Orediggers shot the ball efficiently at 45.2 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from the 3-point line, while the Eagles struggled to maintain a decent first-half shooting percentage. The Eagles shot 38.2 percent from the field and 30 percent from the 3-point line which stopped them from building momentum and forcing an early comeback.
The Eagles shooting woes continued in the second half of the ball game shooting 39.4 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the 3-point-line.
Erin Graham, senior of Deland, Florida, led the Eagles in scoring with 17 points on 7-15 shooting from the field and 3-9 shooting from the 3-point line. Feddersen, was not far behind scoring 16 points on 5-17 shooting from the field.
The Eagles couldn’t prevent the Orediggers from scoring allowing them to end the game shooting 44.8 percent from the field and 55 percent from the 3-point line.
CSC is on the road this weekend, traveling to Denver, Friday, to play Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Colorado Springs, Saturday, to play the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. Tipoff against MSU-D is scheduled for 5 p.m. The matchup with UCCS will tip off at 5:30 p.m.
