Watching may be the new playing
Gaming channels on YouTube are an increasingly popular way to pass the time on the Internet. Some may ask why anybody would watch somebody else play games rather than play themselves? While this is a legitimate question, there are several reasons why these channels have exploded in popularity. Specifically, the Game Grumps YouTube channel is one of the most popular and for good reason.
The Game Grumps channel is primarily represented by gaming personality Arin Hansen, also known as “Egoraptor” in online circles, best known for his work on the YouTube gaming show “Sequelitis,” and musician Leigh Daniel Avidan, just known as Danny on the channel. They have several other personalities who have, in the past, produced regular shows on the channel. The Game Grumps channel has also featured celebrity guests such as Steve-O, Rob Schneider, and Jacob Anderson, better known as Grey Worm from “HBO’s Game of Thrones.”
The Game Grumps YouTube channel currently releases an average of two videos per day, one at 11 a.m. and one at 3 p.m. Each video is about 15 minutes long. They play a variety of old gaming classics like “Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door,” new games like “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” and silly games like “World Party Games.” There is a large variety of content for all different audiences.
The best part about the Game Grumps channel, however, is the commentary. The natural conversations that occur between Arin and Danny are often hilarious, sometimes even heartfelt. They tend to use mature language and may not be suited for younger audiences, and can rely heavily on immature humor that may not appeal to everybody. Arin and Danny talk about the games they play, their life experiences, and generally have a great chemistry with each other. It’s obvious that the two are good friends outside of Game Grumps, making their banter sound natural. Almost every video provides something to laugh about, even years later.
The Game Grumps channel also exhibits an ability to not take itself too seriously. Several other gaming channels on YouTube feature gamers who are set to accomplish things, be it speedrunning, or completing the game faster than anyone else, or record setting in other ways. The Game Grumps, however, don’t care about being the best; gaming provides a backdrop for their conversations. They find themselves laughing about glitches or difficult parts in games that they may not be able to pass. They don’t care about completing game series and often don’t care if any progress gets made during certain games.
If you’re looking for a good way to pass the time, the Game Grumps are a fine option, providing fun commentary and often hilarious gameplay. I recommend them wholeheartedly as a YouTube gaming channel to get into.
