Coffee shop future still up for debate

The future of the coffee shop in the library, Book Ends, continues to be a topic of debate. Some members of Senate including President Carly Slaght felt that Book Ends was quite costly, “not being used enough,” and presented some complaints regarding noise. Senate proposed ideas and alternatives, such as a barista could be hired on campus. Until the Student Senate comes to a verdict, however, Book Ends remains on the first floor of the Reta E. King Library. Student Senate discussed plans concerning future senators of the resident halls.
With the elections underway, Student Senate Chief Justice Samantha Merrill explained that the petitions were due noon yesterday, and should have been given to her or any other justice of the court. Elections will open at noon Sept. 5, and will close noon Sept. 7.
New senators will be sworn in Monday, Sept. 11, at the senate meeting.
Another topic at the meeting was the financial situation of Senate. As of Monday evening, the financial balance “is in the negative,” said Vice President of Finance Lukas Klueber; its current balance sits at -$130,670 of un-allocated funds. However, as later explained by Faculty Advisor Deena Kennell and Klueber, there is no need to worry because they will receive “roughly $300,000,” once the school year kicks off.
Klueber also said that it could be about three weeks before the funds are received.
Senate also came to a conclusion regarding the various events soon to take place on campus including: Week of Welcome, Free Movie Night, and the Magician John Rotellini coming to campus Monday.
Topics still up for debate include: online chat rooms in place of open forums to improve student feedback, installation of water bottle filling stations, and the date for Spring Daze.
