Faculty member presents on zombies and pop culture as part of Graves Lecture Series

Zombies came to Chadron State College just before Halloween during the Graves Lecture Series from 7-8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center Chicoine Atrium.

The feature speaker, Nate Danerty, who has a Ph.D. in American Literature from Stony Brook University in New York, is a CSC faculty member.

The Graves Lecture Series is a series of scholarly presentations, most of them given by CSC faculty and staff and occasionally community members. The Graves Lecture Series started in the fall of 2016 and is named in Dorset Graves’ honor. Since these lectures started, there have been over 100 presentations, with the topics ranging vastly.

On Tuesday night, Daunerty’s presentation focused on Cole Whiteheads’ New York Times best-selling novel “Zone One,” a zombie apocalypse novel. His presentation focused on the main character Mark Spitz, and his response to all human nature collapsing around him, as well as his thoughts on the identification of the pre-and post-apocalyptic worlds. His presentation also consisted of talking about the history of zombies, where they come from and the large role they play in today’s pop culture in movies, television shows and books.
