‘Bomb cyclone’ blizzard hits Chadron
What some are calling the “Blizzard of the Century” unleashed itself on Chadron Wednesday, causing white-out conditions, blowing snow and even flooding in areas such as Bordeaux Creek.
According to Accuweather.com, this storm is “expected to undergo ‘bombogenesis,’” a phenomenon that causes barometric pressure to fall very fast. Heavy snows of 18-24 inches are expected in the Chadron area.
Accuweather’s senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said that the blizzard is expected to hit at “hurricane force”, with winds reaching up to 45 miles per hour.
“We expect a major blizzard to unfold with winds likely to approach hurricane force, heavy snow and massive drifts,” said Sosnowski.
CSC made the call to close campus mid-afternoon Tuesday and issued an email notifying the closure. As of press time Wednesday, the Dining Hall remains open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days in addition to the C-Store in High Rise staying open from 8 p.m. – midnight. Director of College Relations Alex Helmbrecht warned students and staff of the National Weather Service’s forecast, remininding campus that “travel should be avoided.”
According to the National Weather Service, a blizzard warning is issued when the combination of strong wind, low visibility and heavy snow will significantly impact daily life. The National Weather Service predicts the Chadron area may receive up to 24 inches of snow, and that snow combined with high winds will create whiteout conditions. Extremely hazardous road conditions are expected and travel should be avoided.”
