October introduces us to the autumn season

October is the month that begins to start feeling like fall. Fall brings colder weather, football, pumpkin spice, falling leaves, and the beginning of the holiday season. Despite the cold weather, there are plenty of fun things to do in and around Chadron this time of year.

One of the most popular activities is going to a pumpkin patch. There is a pumpkin patch in Rapid City, South Dakota, called Lil’ Harvester’s Pumpkin Patch, located on 8686 S. Highway 16. This little pumpkin patch has plenty of pumpkins you can choose from, some weighing over 50 pounds. They also have a farmers-market you can stroll through for fresh produce.

With Halloween coming up, going to a haunted house will really get you into the spooky spirit. There is a haunted house in Rapid City called Terror in the Dark Haunted House, located at 800 San Fransisco St. This haunted house also has a corn maze and they both open from Friday, Oct. 18th until Sunday, Oct. 20th, and then from Friday, Oct. 25th to Sunday, Oct. 28th. This haunted house opens at 7 p.m. and costs $10.00.

However, being a Colorado native, if you really want to get scared, I suggest making a trip to Denver and visiting the 13th Floor Haunted House. That will give you quite the scare.

Football is in full swing for this cold fall. If you are a football fan, go support our local Chadron State Eagles. This will give you an exciting, competitive atmosphere that you can enjoy with your friends and classmates. The next Eagles home game is Saturday, Nov. 9th at noon. They are taking on South Dakota School of Mines at Elliott Field.

You can also support our local stores and restaurants during this season. If you have a hankering for pumpkin spice or coffee in general, a new coffee shop just opened here in Chadron. It is called Just Love Coffee Café. This coffee shop is located on 302 Main St. and has a variety of options for the coffee lovers out there, as well as many delicious food options for anyone that is hungry.

The fall season is a time for coming together and celebrating the upcoming holiday seasons.

Going out with friends and family for exciting activities is a great way to embrace the season. Don’t let this cold weather stop you from having fun because there are great places to go to get into the fall spirit.
