RLA Dummy Ropin’ contest lassos about 80
The sound of country music filled the air in the Hub Monday night as 80 students showcased their roping skills during the third annual Dummy Ropin’ event sponsored by RLA. Teams of two had to survive three rounds of roping for a chance to win the grand prize.
In the first round, there were 44 teams of two. That dwindled down to 37 teams in the second round. Finishing with 20 teams in the third and final round. To advance each round, teams had to first rope the head or the heel, next rope the head and the heel and in the third round they were timed on how fast they could rope the head and the heel.
Patrick Brown, sophomore of Kadoka, South Dakota, and Buck Butterfield, junior of Warland, Wyoming, took home the grand prize winning the fastest roping.
This event presented a different experience for a lot of students, the countryside and the city side come together.
“It’s a great teaching moment,” said coordinator of the event Shantelle Roy, senior of Scotia.
“I like to meet new people and have fun with the friends I have,” Anna Fisher, freshman of Beaver City said. Fisher also commented that she grew up roping dummies in her front yard with her brothers.
Hot chocolate paired with cinnamon rolls and puppy chow were offered to students.
The budget for the event totaled $332, which was used to purchase prizes and food, according to Roy.
RLA will continue events this weekend with Live Clue night Friday in the Reta King Library at 7 p.m. and Husker Party at 1:30 p.m. in the Hub, Saturday.
