Eagles prepare for RMAC tournaments
Chadron State College is preparing for the Rocky Mountain Open tournament after finishing its dual season as the Eagles wrestling team lost 29-12 against No.13 Adams State University, Thursday, in the Chicoine Center.
The Eagles enter the upcoming one-day tournament with a 1-5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record and 7-11 overall record.
“When evaluating our dual season, we can’t just look at our wins and losses, we wrestled a very tough schedule as we competed against Division I, Division II, NAIA, and top NJCAA programs.” Head Wrestling Coach Brett Hunter said. “This season we had 5 freshmen in our starting lineup, and with the youth you expect to be inconsistent at times, and we were definitely that. Overall, I thought things could have been better but again we believe each week we continued to show growth and continued to fight each time we stepped on the mat representing Chadron State College.”
In the Rocky Mountain Open, the Eagles plan on starting its varsity lineup between 2-3 matches for fine-tuning and mental preparation for the upcoming NCAA Region 6 Championship tournament Feb. 29, in Kearney, according to Hunter.
Against Adams State, CSC’s only victories on the mat came from pins by 197-pounder Wade French, senior of Herriman, Utah, and 285-pounder Mason Watt, redshirt freshman of Broomfield, Colorado.
A trio of top-10 wrestlers led the Grizzlies as the team took eight victories in the Chicoine Center. Senior 133-pounder Brandon Kile, of Hastings, lost by major decision to No.5 Jonathan Andreatta, sophomore of Walsenburg, Colorado, redshirt freshman 141-pounder Joe Taylor, of Glenrock, Wyoming, lost by major decision to No.4 Noah Hermosillo, sophomore of Gypsum, Colorado, and 149-pounder Chance Karst, junior of Powell, Wyoming, lost by decision to No.9 Josiah Rider, Freshman of Grand Junction, Colorado.
“There are some key areas that we will really need to focus on down the stretch: First, our mentality, second, our effort, third, having fun. All three of these areas are key in order for us to get some guys to the national tournament in March.” Hunter said.
