“She Kills Monsters” soon to debut at CSC
Fans of theater, fantasy and Dungeons and Dragons are in for a treat.
The CSC Theatre department will begin their debut performance of “She Kills Monsters”, written by Qui Nguyen, next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre in Memorial Hall. They will have recurring showings Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and a performance 2 p.m. on Sunday.
“She Kills Monsters” is about an average 24-year-old, Agnes, dealing with the death of her family. While cleaning her family’s house, she stumbles upon her late sister’s Dungeons and Dragons module. After taking the fantasy game to a Dungeons and Dragons expert, Chuck, Agnes decides to plunge herself into the role-playing game with his help. Along her fantasy adventures, Agnes makes discoveries about herself and her lost family while coming to terms with her grief.
According to Poarch, the show’s scenes switch between a reality world and the fantasy world of Dungeons and Dragons. She also mentioned that the audience will have a sort of omniscient view of the story, as separate scenes take place in the past, present and future.
Because the performance will be in the Black Box Theatre, which only seats about 72, Poarch said the show will be interactive.
“It’s a very intimate setting,” Poarch said, “the audience will have moments of being right up on these characters. I think that they’re going to actually feel like they are apart of the fantasy world of Dungeons and Dragons. And maybe they’ll either feel like the heroes or monsters.”
Although the cast and technical crew have been working on the production since Jan. 20, Poarch said the fight choreography has taken the most preparation, explaining that much of the cast is new to stage combat and had to practice diligently to be safe and convincing.

“It’ll be a lot of fun, and hopefully there will be some tears,” Poarch said.
