Biden will lead the nation forward

early four years ago The Eagle’s staff officially endorsed Donald Trump for president, reasoning that Trump’s non-political nature would be a welcome departure from that of career politicians who had come before. Many voters agreed.

But if rooting out corruption in American politics was the goal, electing Trump was a colossal miss that merely cut out the middleman – trading the bought-politician for the buyer.

Four years on, Trump has made it clear he is not fit for another term in the White House. Were it simply that he remains the favorite candidate of white supremacists, it would be enough to lose our confidence. But his gross mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic that has killed over 200,000 Americans; his support of white supremacist militias; his promotion of baseless conspiracy theories; his proclivity for fascism; his denigration of the fourth estate and soldiers of the U.S. military; his disinterest in the welfare of human beings who are refugees, non-white citizens, or members of our LGBTQ+ community; his desire to abuse his power and put his friends and financial interests above the best interests of the people; his never ending supply of falsehoods and self-interest  – his lack of basic decency – proves he is unfit to occupy the White House.

For those reasons, and many more, The Eagle is endorsing Joe Biden for president.

Biden might not be the ideological firebrand some progressive voters would prefer, but his political career demonstrates he has the ability to fix the damage Trump and his presidency caused, and heal the divide between Americans that has grown to a fever-pitch over the past four years. Nobody wants a bought-and-paid for politician (which Biden isn’t) but Trump has shown that giving control of the plane over to a untrained passenger just because you dislike qualified pilots, is a recipe for disaster.

Biden will bring to the White House a lifetime of political experience, including the insights he gained managing the economic recovery package during his time as vice president. His appointment of Sen. Kamala Harris, a Democrat of California, will elevate an essential female voice to the Oval Office. The pair will bring back a willingness to protect the rights of all Americans, regardless of race, creed and religion.

As we move forward as a nation toward significant challenges like an increasing wage gap, devastating climate change fallout, a continuing lack of access to affordable health care, and the removal of special interests from American politics, Biden brings the experience – and of equal importance, the disposition, reason, decency, and maturity – necessary to meet and overcome the challenge.

The same cannot be said for Trump. Therefore, we heartily endorse Sen. Joe Biden for president.
