Students compete in NBA 2K21 tournament

Last Thursday, Oct. 22, Chadron State hosted an NBA 2K21 (Video game) tournament. The tournament was held in the pit of the student center and the games were played on an Xbox one.  

How the tournament games worked was that the top 4 players out of the tournament would win prizes. They were 10 total players a small group so the chances of getting a prize was high. It was a double elimination, 3-minute quarters with fatigue of the players turned off and injuries also turned off. So, none of the star players the gamers were using would get hurt and cost their prizes 

The prizes consisted of first place winner will be getting a 100$ gift card to Walmart. Second place winner would take home a Sony Bluetooth speaker. And lastly the Third place and forth place would be taking home a 25$ gift card to PlayStation store or to the Xbox store of their choosing.   

Due because of covid-19, Before it was a player turn to play, he had to wear plastic gloves before using the controller to play. I thought it would have some effect on players while I was covering the games but when I asked Jordan watt a senior here at Chadron state if wearing the gloves affected his play? He said “It didn’t affect my play at all. All It did was make my hands sweatier than they already get.” 

When the game started you could tell these players really wanted those prizes. The games were very intense. Out of all the games I covered there was never a blowout all the games went down to the end of the game. So, when players loss it was heartbreaking for them.  

It took over 3 hours to figure out who would be in the final 4 and battle for number one prize of the 100$ gift card to Walmart. The final 4 competitors came down to Ayman a senior at Chadron state, RJ also a senior at Chadron state, Derrick a junior at Chadron state and then lastly Jordan a senior at Chadron.  

Ayman ended up losing to Derrick to come in the fourth place and took home the Xbox 25$ gift card. When asked how he played in the tournament he stated “I felt I played alright there was a lot of good competition in the tournament. Just glad I’m going home with a prize.”  

Since Derrick beat Ayman, he then had to play Jordan. Jordan ended up beating Derrick in a nail biter to punch his ticket into the championship game to play KJ. Derrick ended up getting third place taking home the PlayStation 25$ gift Card.  

The championship is set and now its Jordan against KJ to see who the best 2k player at Chadron state is and who takes home the 100$ gift card to Walmart. The game went to down to wire and eventually KJ edged out Jordan to become the 2k champ and took home the 100$ gift card to Walmart. So, with that means Jordan took home second place and the Sony Bluetooth speaker.  When Jordan was asked how he felt he played in the tournament he said “I felt I played well in the tournament, but I knew RJ was the one to watch for and he ended getting me but I’m proud of how I played, and I still got to take home a prize. So, I’m pleased with my play today.”  

RJ now is the raining 2k champion and when I asked how he thought he played the champion said, “I felt like I played alright even though I went undefeated there’s always things you can improve on.” he also said, “I’m just happy that I won and excited to go to Walmart now!”
