Meet your new Student Senator

BriYanna Lyon, 22, senior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is the new diversity senator.
Why did you decide to run for office?
“So, I did not necessarily run for this position. It was brought to me and I was eager to take it. I think this is a good way to spend the rest of my time here and I have hopes that I will be a good advocate for the Diversity Club in my remaining time here at CSC.”
What are your platforms?
“As far as platforms go, I am honestly not sure. Although, I feel like I am considered as an advocate for the diversity community as a whole. I was given the opportunity to speak at the Hate Speech conference last year here at CSC, as well as speaking at our first protest that was held here this summer.”
In five years, where do you see yourself?
“I see myself in school still getting my doctoral degree though. That is such a huge goal for me. I also see myself living my best life in Texas.”
What are your goals as a senator?
“My goals as a Senator are to 1. to be heard, seen, and understood as I am a part of the Diversity Club and I will speak for them and our wants within the Student Senate. The other goal I have is to get more of my people involved. The Student Senate is a place where change starts, and I want them to know that and use it as a prominent resource to initiate the change that we all want to see here at CSC.”
What message do you have for students?
“The message that I have for students is that, in times like now, there should be conversation going on. The Diversity Club is the start of those conversations. I encourage every student to come to the Diversity meetings. They don’t have to speak, but just listen. Knowledge is power, and I feel as though CSC lacks knowledge about their diversity community and the Diversity Club is the best way that they can educate themselves.”
