Avian death event remains unsolved

Lake Minatare in Scottsbluff County, was closed on March 12, due to reports of waterfowl deaths.

Approximately 300-500 birds were found dead near the lake leading to state officials closing the area. The bird carcasses are being tested to determine cause of death; results will be released on March 26.

Any birds dead found in the area should be reported to Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, contact with dead birds should be avoided.

The Central Flyway on average sees 24 avian death events, last year Nebraska had four bird death events that resulted in 625 total avian deaths.

The park will be cleaned and bird carcasses will be removed before the park reopens.
