Roadrunners outrun Eagles at home
The Eagles were swept by the Roadrunners Friday and Saturday at the CSC Softball Field, coming closest to a win in their first game, 9-8. Chadron State holds a record of 7-17.
“No matter the outcome, we worked as a team and we’re constantly picking each other up,” Gabby Russell, junior of Oceanside, California, said in a message to the Eagle.
For the first game, Bailey Marvel, sophomore of Lakewood, Colorado, started off the scoring for The Eagles in the second inning. Marvel singled up the middle, and advanced to second following the throw. Samantha Conradie, freshman of Broomfield, Colorado, made it to third, allowing Ellie Owens, senior of Longmont, Colorado, and Bailey Rominger, senior of Vail, Arizona, to score.
In the fourth, Jessie Henchenski, freshman of Fort Collins, Colorado, clocked a sacrifice fly to center, moving Addison Spears, freshman of Berthoud, Colorado, to third and bringing Owens home.
Henchenski returned to the batter’s box in the sixth inning with a double to left center, bringing both Marvel and Owens home for two runs.
In the seventh, Ali Conder, junior of Fernley, Nevada, earned a double with a hit to left center, allowing Maples to score. Conradie followed with a single to short, advancing Owens to third and bringing Conder home. Marvel finished the game with a single to right center, advancing Conradie to second and sending Owens home.
Tia Kohl, junior of Wichita, Kansas, started the game as pitcher. Kohl pitched five innings, faced 29 batters, and pitched 87 times. She pitched five walks and one strikeout.
Russell closed the first and second games facing 17 batters with 28 pitches.
“I personally felt like I went into the games with a positive mindset and worked my hardest to get the job done,” Russell said. “As a team, we went into every inning working our hardest, playing like we had nothing to lose.”
The Eagles struggled a little in the batter’s box during their second game, losing 9-0.
Peyton Propp, sophomore of Lakewood, Colorado, pitched the first three innings, pitching five walks and four strikeouts.
The Eagles returned to the field Saturday with bats swinging. Owens singling to right field and batting Henchenski home in the first inning. Chadron State still fell to MSU Denver in the end, 11-2.
In the third inning, Rominger advanced Henchenski and brought Marvel home after a single to center field, wrapping up the runs for the Eagles in their third game.
Kohl returned to the pitching mound for three innings with 50 pitches, a strike out and faced 17 batters. Russell followed for two innings, facing 11 batters and pitching 33 times. Caitlin Lotspeich, sophomore of Klamath, Oregon, closed the last inning, facing six batters and pitching 23 times.
The Eagles finished their series against MSU Denver with a 9-3 loss.
Conradie reached for first following an error by shortstop in the third inning, the hit advancing Maples to second and allowing Kroll to score. Quijas flied out a sacrifice hit to right field to advance Henchenski to second and Conradie to third, while bringing Maples home.
In the fifth inning, Quijas hit a single, advancing Henchenski and earning another RBI as Marvel ran home.
CSC will continue their season against Adams State, starting at noon, Saturday.
