Eagles mine for gold in Rapid City
The Eagles track and field team finished Saturday with 10 wins, eight for the men and two for the women, and many second placements at the Bauer Invitational hosted by South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City, South Dakota.
“We kind of expected it,” Head Track and Field Coach Riley Northrup said. “Every meet’s a little bit different. It depends on what people are trying to accomplish each weekend.”
Brodie Roden, junior of Riverton, Wyoming, won the 200-meter and the 400-meter races with times of 21.65 seconds and 49.11 seconds.
Osvaldo Cano, sophomore of Oshkosh, was right behind taking second in the 400 meters with 50.12 seconds, and placing third in the 200 meters with a run of 22.26 seconds
Roden and Osvaldo Cano were joined by Morgan Fawver, sophomore of McCook, and Harley Rhoades, junior of Douglas, Wyoming, in the 4×400 meter relay, taking first with a time of 3:23.97.
Logan Moravec, sophomore of Gering, was another winner in the 800-meter race, timed at 1:58.11
Osiel Cano, sophomore of Oshkosh, ran the 400-meter hurdles at 55.91 seconds, placing him first.
In the throws, Shane Collins, sophomore of Bison, South Dakota, won the discus with a throw of 146 feet, 5.5 inches. Collins also finished second in the hammer throw with 177 feet, 1.75 inches.
Naishaun Jernigan, sophomore of Springfield, Massachusetts, jumped 23 feet, 2.5 inches in the long jump to win the event.
In the triple jump, Derrick Nwagwu, sophomore of Aurora, Colorado, took first with a mark of 45 feet, 3 inches. He was followed by Brock Voth, junior of Berthoud, Colorado, in second with 43 feet, 20 inches, and Joss Linse, junior of Plattsmouth, in third with 43 feet, 6 inches.
Javan Lanier, graduate of Aurora, Colorado, finished second with 11.03 seconds, and Emory Yoosook, freshman of Casper, Wyoming took third with 11.12 seconds in the 100-meter dash.
Logan Peila, freshman of Miles City, Montana, was runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.64 seconds. While in the 110-meter hurdles, Creighton Trembly, freshman of Longmont, Colorado, finished second, timed at 15.56 seconds.
Quest Savery, freshman of Miles City, Montana, threw 182 feet, 10.25 inches in the javelin to take second place.
In the high jump, Alec Penfield, sophomore of Lusk, Wyoming, cleared 6 feet, 6.5 inches to take second place, and Joe Dumsa, junior of Sandy, Utah, cleared 6 feet, 4.5 inches to finish third.
The women’s team continued to compete for gold, with two winners and a handful of runners-up.
Hannah Christie, freshman of Alpine, Wyoming, won the 100-meter hurdles with a run of 15.74 seconds.
Northrup said he was proud of her performance especially since it’s her first year competing in the hurdles.
Jourdain Cerenil, freshman of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, cleared 5 feet, 5.75 inches in the high jump to take first. Cerenil finished third in the long jump with a mark of 16 feet, 1 inch.
Also, in the high jump, Miranda Gilkey, junior of Lusk, Wyoming, and Destiny Pelton, freshman of Fort Morgan, Colorado, both cleared 5 feet, 2.75 inches, taking second and third place. Gilkey jumped 34 feet, 11.25 inches to finish second in the triple jump.
Michaela Hill, sophomore of Eaton, Colorado, came second in the 400 meters at 1:01.92.
Madi Watson, senior of Mitchell, finished the 5000 meters at 19:38.56, placing her in the runner-up spot.
Courtney Smith, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyoming, finished second in the discus with a throw of 127 feet, 4.75 inches.
Currently, The Eagles’ next track meet is the Loper Invitational, Sunday in Kearney.
“With the conference meet coming up in two weeks, I think we have a lot of people that are capable of higher-level performances,” Northrup said. “I’m just hoping this weekend, we get some good weather and I think we’re going to get some good competition.”
