Range students take a field trip

Students in CSC’s ruminant production class spent last week touring agricultural businesses in Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado.

Over five days the 27 students visited 17 different agricultural businesses.

The trip was funded by High Impact Learning Funds.

The group took three buses driven by CSC professor Ron Bloze, past CSC professor Jim O’Rouke and CSC assistant rodeo coach Rowdy Moon.

The first day, April 5, they visited Colorado Agriproducts Ethanol Plant in Bridgeport, Schular Red Angus in Reddington, Darnall Feeders and Olsen Herefords in Harrisburg. They then spent the night in Morgan, Colorado.

The next day started with a tour of Rocky Mountain Natural Meats, Brush Meat Processors and Wilgenberg Dairy in Brush Colorado followed by Croissant Red Angus in Briggsdale and finishing with Leachman Cattle Co. of Colorado in Wellington. The group then spent the night in Laramie, Wyoming.

April 7 the class visited Colorado State University Beef Improvement Center and the TA ranch in Saratoga, Wyoming. They finished the day at Miles land and Livestock in Medicine Bow, Wyoming.  They then spent the night in Casper, Wyoming.

The fourth day they visited Lankistar Ranch in Glenrock, Wyoming, Dilts Sheep Ranch in Douglas, Wyoming and the Durham Buffalo Ranch in Wright, Wyoming where the group stayed the night.

The final day, April 9, the group visited Hanson Ranch and Askin Land and Livestock in Lusk, Wyoming. Their last tour was of Broken Arrow Angus Ranch in Harrison.

“They (the students) don’t have to count on just listening they actually get to see,” Said Bolze. “It’s ruminant production not just beef production, although most of it is taught that way. So we went to a bison ranch, we went to a large dairy and a 10,000 head ewe operation, we went to a bison harvesting plant.”
