Theater Day returns to CSC
By Olivia Bryant
The CSC theatre department hosted area high school students and directors for its annual Theatre Day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 7.
Roughly 175 students participated in twelve workshops designed to work on basic skills that can be applied to high school productions.
“We do Theatre Day for two reasons,” Scott Cavin, theatre professor, said. “One is to work with area high school students and expose them to this wonderful art form. At the same time, we are recruiting. We are showing off the college and letting students know this is an option. It also gives our (CSC) students a chance to take what they’ve learned in classes and see how well they know that material by teaching it to someone else.”
The workshops offered throughout the day included: Yes, And-Creating Through Improvisation, Picture Perfect-Creating Stage Pictures, Story Behind The Threads-How Costumes Create Characters, and Brushstrokes-Creating Through Illusion.
“I got the chance to attend [Theatre Day] my senior year of high school and did the stage combat and theatre workshops,” Cheyenne Bacon, 20, of Lewellen, said. “In my first year at CSC, I helped lead a ‘Roar of the Greasepaint’ workshop where students explored stage makeup, discussed its importance, and its major differences to street makeup. I am excited to be leading the same workshop this year.”
During the day, high school seniors planning to attend CSC in Fall 2022 auditioned for the Theatre Apprenticeship program. This program provides financial and tuition assistance to students for their participation in CSC theatre productions. The day concluded with a preview performance of the production “Little Shop of Horrors” and a question-and-answer panel led by CSC students and production staff.
