Eagles struggle for runs; swept by Rangers
Chadron State College softball team struggled through the weekend series against Regis University and was outran all four games.
“We just haven’t found our groove yet,” Addison Spears, junior of Berthoud, Colorado, said. “Every day is different, we are on one day and off the next. Once we find that consistency we will be coming out on top.”
One of the stronger games for the Eagles was their third game which started off in the Eagles favor with three runs in the first inning.
Addison Spears, junior of Berthoud, Colorado, made things happen in the batter’s box. In the first inning, she doubled down the left field line for three RBIs to start off the game. When she returned in the fifth inning to bat, she earned another RBI with a single up the middle.
“I feel like this weekend I went in with a mindset of just having fun and giving it my all and I would say it paid off,” Spears said. “I could have had better range on the field, but this weekend was one of my better weekends in the box.”
The Eagles still took the loss, 9-4.
Tia Kohl, senior of Wichita, Kansas, who pitched against the Rangers and kept them to one run during the second game also took the mound during the third and fourth. She pitched only four hits and two walks, while earning eight strikeouts during the second game Saturday.
Kohl closed out the first game Sunday, pitching the last four innings. She struck out six batters but still allowed four hits and four runs of 19 at bats and 81 pitches.
“Despite the end result, I was happy with how we all came together and tried out best to keep each other motivated and pick each other up when we were down,” Spears said.
The first game of the series went Regis University, 10-1, the only run for the Eagles was scored by Martinez after Allie Mason, senior of Loveland, Colorado, was hit by a pitch and advanced the loaded bases.
Regis University kept the Eagles to zero for a second time over the weekend for the fourth and final game.
The Eagles host New Mexico Highlands University for a series of games this weekend, starting at noon, Saturday, at the CSC softball field.
