CSC softball team splits the weekend series against New Mexico Highlands University, adding two wins to its record, 6-26

CSC softball team battles through the weekend to split the games with New Mexico Highlands University, taking a win and a lose each day.

Going into the seventh inning of the first game with a one-run lead, the Eagles were overwhelmed by a four-run rally by the Cowgirls to take the lead over CSC, 5-2.

Kenzi Garner, freshman of Broomfield, Colorado, pitched all seven innings and earned six strikeouts of her 31 at bats. New Mexico Highlands was able to get 10 hits and five runs on Garner though.

The Eagles started the second game swinging for the fences with a home run by Sloane Quijas, sophomore of Erie, Colorado. Also in the first inning was a single by Paige Propp, sophomore of Lakewood, Colorado, who brought Jessie Henchenski, sophomore of Fort Collins, Colorado, in for a run.

The fourth inning saw a rally from the Eagles with two more home runs from Addison Spears, junior of Berthoud, Colorado, and Amaya Ruiz, freshman of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; Chloe Brown, junior of Riverside, California, made it home on a wild pitch; and Allie Mason, senior of Loveland, Colorado, was walked, advancing the runners and moving Lauren Zimmerman, freshman of Reno, Nevada, home.

Helping the bats was Tia Kohl, senior of Wichita, Kansas, who pitched six innings. Even though she had five hits and two runs, Kohl earned eight strikeouts of 24 at bats. The Eagles won, 6-2.

Sunday saw another split with Chadron State taking the second game, but both games ended with a one-run leads.

Gabby Russell, senior of Oceanside, California, took the mound for the entire game with 97 pitches, allowing 11 hits and nine runs.

Despite scoring eight in the third game, the Eagles were unable to come away with the win, 9-8.

Zimmerman, Propp, and Mackenzi Kroll, sophomore of Brighton, Colorado, had two RBIs each. Propp got three hits of her four at bats while Kroll had two hits of four at bats.

Kohl returned to the mound for the final game to tally up six strikeouts while allowing six hits and two runs. She had 111 pitches of the 31 batters she faced.

In the third inning, Ruiz put the first runs on the board with a homer to right center, also bringing Spears home.

The third run came in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly from Zimmerman, allowing the Eagles to take a 3-2 win.

CSC softball team travels to Denver for a weekend series against Metropolitan State University-Denver, the first game starting at noon, Saturday.
