150th anniversary of Arbor Day

April 29 will mark the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day which got its start in Nebraska City. 

Arbor day was announced by Robert Furnas who was the Nebraska Governor in 1874. 

The day was originally celebrated April 10, but was moved to be the last Friday of April. 

The first Arbor day was celebrated with the planting of over one million trees.

In 1920, 45 states began celebrating Arbor Day. Today it is celebrated in all 50 states. 

“Trees are a key part of the solution to some of the biggest issues facing our planet,” the Arbor Day Foundation Lodge. “That’s why we have dedicated the last 50 years to planting trees in forests and communities around the world. And with the help of our extensive partner network, we can ensure that this work is focused where it can make the biggest impact.

Arbor Lodge State Historical Park which was the original home of J. Sterling Morton, who first introduced the idea for Arbor Day  will be hosting events.

Events will include Omaha Street Percussion, tree climbing, Jr. Abortionist program, orchard tours, interactive displays, 18-72 inspired dessert and drink menu, Farm and Forest Dinner and Jayson Fann artists event. 

CSC student senate will be hosting a tree planting event on Arbor Day.

Participants will meet at the Clock tower at noon.
