CSC student to bike 3,250 miles across the U.S.
CSC Student Jace Demeranville, 21, junior of Gering will be attempting to bike 3,250 miles across the U.S.
Demeranville and CSC professors, Curt Kinbacher, Mary Clai Jones and Markus Jones will begin the 8 week long trip, May 11. They will begin by biking to Washington D.C. then taking a train to Seattle and finish by biking back to Chadron.
While he has always had an interest in biking it was Kinbacher who got Demeranville interested in long distance biking in 2019.
“Growing up, I would ride my bike around the neighborhood,” Demeranville said. “I had a little ramp I would do “tricks” on. But it wasn’t until fall of 2019 that my interest peaked. Dr. Kinbacher introduced the idea of a cross-country bike tour, and I was hooked. The next spring COVID-19 hit, and I was sent home to finish the semester. It gave me an opportunity to save up for a bike(Cool Ranch is its name) and I threw myself into the world of cycling. My first long distance ride was the Roubidoux Quick and Dirty, a 67-mile race in Gering, Nebraska, during the summer of 2021. It was tough but a great experience. If I wasn’t on this trip, I would sign up for the race again.”
Demeranville is also a Resident Advisor in Kent Hall and recently won the Spring Daze Hotdog Eating Contest. In his free time he enjoys hanging out with his friends, biking and sleeping.
He has been preparing for the trip by researching and purchasing gear, working out and cycling on the weekends.
“I am most excited for Seattle and Grand Teton National Park,” Demeranville said. “I have never been west of the Rockies, so I am excited for the new scenery. Both of those places have been on my bucket list, and I am excited to mark them off. I am really excited for the seafood in Seattle and in Grand Teton, I hope to use a rest day to climb the infamous Grand Teton, 13,775 feet.”
