Eagles extend losing streak to three

By Eben Rosentrater

It was a rough weekend for the CSC men’s basketball team after two tough road losses against the Colorado Mesa Mavericks of Grand Junction, and the Westminster Griffins of Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Eagles struggled in all aspects of the game despite their recent string of strong performances in weeks prior, dropping them to sixth in the RMAC.

On Friday, the Eagles traveled to Grand Junction to take on the Mavericks. The team shot well for the first six minutes of the contest; however, Mesa’s offense was relentless from there on out.

Trailing 13-9, the Mavericks went on a 10-0 run jumping out to a six-point lead, a lead they would hold for the rest of the game.

Going into halftime, the Eagles had scored just 29 points compared to the Mavericks’ 37, a relatively dismal first half for the Eagles.

However, the team was not ready to back down. After the long stretch of good shooting, the score was 46-45 in the Mavericks favor. The score stayed tight until, with 8 minutes remaining, Mesa went on a 7-0 run, making a comeback from Chadron difficult.

The Eagles would go on to lose for the second straight game, 60-73. Saturday’s game against the Griffins fared better for Chadron State, however, would still end in disappointment.

Similar to Friday, the Eagles were quick to jump out to a strong lead, leading by six at two different points in the first half.

The Eagles’ biggest problem in the second half came from turnovers. The team committed 15 total throughout the entire contest, nearly twice as much as the Griffins. Westminster took advantage of every opportunity which was just enough to keep the Eagles at bay.

The Eagles lost their third straight game, 73-76, after failing to battle back against the Westminster offensive attack.

The Eagles will take the court again when they host the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis, Durango, Colorado, at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, in the Chicoine Center.
