Struggle continues for women’s basketball team

By Eben Rosentrater

Trouble continues to plague the CSC women’s basketball team after another disappointing weekend on the road against the Colorado Mesa Mavericks, Grand Junction, and the Westminster Griffins, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Nothing could seem to go right for the Eagles, forcing two more double digit losses and some of the lowest scoring the team has seen this season.

On Friday, the Eagles traveled to Grand Junction to take on the Mavericks. The team struggled from the very beginning and would see no success for the rest of the game.

The Eagles would score just 12 points in the first quarter, and it would only get worse from there, scoring only single digits in every other quarter.

The Mavericks offense was relentless, outscoring the Eagles by nearly double in every single quarter of the contest.

The Eagles shot a season-low .189 from the field, including scoring just one three-pointer, compared to the Mavericks’ .453. Chadron was also out-rebounded by eight and committed three more turnovers.

All of this was too much for Chadron State as they would lose big, 31-76, recording their worst final score of the year.

The Eagles’ struggles would continue on Saturday in Salt Lake City, Utah, against the Westminster Griffins.

The team would have slightly better luck shooting, but not enough to edge out the strong Westminster offense. Going into halftime, the Eagles trailed by seven. Not a large lead by any means, however, lights-out shooting from the Griffins would put the game far out of reach for Chadron State.

The Griffins scored nearly twice as much in the second half as they did in the first, making a comeback nearly impossible for the worn-down Eagles.

Chadron State would go on to lose their 13th contest of the season, 57-83, dropping them to 14th in the RMAC.

The Eagles were led offensively over the weekend by Claudia Dolliger, redshirt freshman of Bourbonnais, Illinois, scoring 23 total points between the two games, shooting .450 from the field. She also was a big help at the boards recording 14 total rebounds.

Ashayla Powers, sophomore of Longmont, Colorado, and Samiyah Worrell, senior of Fountain, Colorado, combined for another 34 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

The Eagles return to action again when they take on the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis, Durango, Colorado, at 5:30 p.m., on Friday, in the Chicoine Center.
