Women’s wrestling continues to dominate

By Whitley Reder

The CSC women’s wrestling team dominated last weekend in York and Hastings, defeating the Panthers and Broncos by double digits on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday’s dual against the Panthers was lopsided in favor of the Eagles. Every Chadron wrestler either won by forfeit or by complete control of the mat. Ryleigh Dye, sophomore of Queens Creek, Arizona, at 136 lbs, was fastest to pin her opponent to the mat, defeating her opponent in just one minute, and 12 seconds.

She, along with four other Eagle wrestlers, won by either pin or technical fall, giving Chadron a commanding 46-0 shutout victory.

The Eagles traveled to Hastings for the Hastings Open on Sunday, which included a dual with the Broncos.

This 13-team tournament included NAIA and NCAA colleges from across the country.

The Eagles had three competitions canceled due to weather over Christmas break. Competing in the Hastings Open may have been difficult for the Eagles after three weeks off. However, Taylor Lindstrom, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota, said otherwise.

“I wouldn’t say I was nervous at all going into the open after the break. Like I said, it was definitely a fast turnaround, but it felt great to finally have some matches after the last few competitions were canceled,” Lindstrom said, “Plus, there was so much adrenaline. I think if I didn’t try really hard, I could have been nervous.”

Kinsey Smith, senior of Windsor, Colorado, and Taylor Lindstrom placed third and fourth respectively, in the 101-pound weight class.

Kamila Montenegro, junior of Las Vegas, Nevada, was the individual champion for the 170-pound weight class.

The Eagles’ strong performance carried into their dual with the Broncos, win in another impressive 38-11 victory, improving their record to 7-1.

The Eagles compete next at the York University Dual Tournament and Open on Jan. 13-14 in York.
