The CSC women’s wrestling team boosted their record to 6-1 after winning a dual and placing second out of 30 teams at the York University Dual Tournament and Open in York last Friday and Saturday.
The Eagles fought hard in York. They ended the weekend with two champions and three other individual placers on top of being second overall as a team.
Karstin Hollen, sophomore of Mesa, Arizona, at 143 lbs, and Marissa Porsch, freshman of Selden, Kansas, at 155 lbs, were the two champions of the weekend for the Eagles.
Aside from the two victories, Isabell Ortiz, freshman of Lakin, Kansas, contributed team points for the Eagles by placing second in the 116-pound weight division, with two tough matches.
During the first round of the semifinals, Ortiz barely came out on top. However, she ended up short during the championship round in a 12-0 tech fall.
“I enjoy the tough matches more because I feel like I get more out of it,” Ortiz said. “I’m able to learn and improve from those tough matches, but it is nice to take an easy win once in a while.”
101-pounder Taylor Lindstrom, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Josephine Wearmouth, freshman of Saint Charles, Iowa, at 130 lbs, both placed third in their respective divisions.
“I felt as if the team performed very well,” Ortiz said, “We all came out there with the mindset of winning. The team also handled themselves and others with respect throughout the tournament.”
Both the CSC men’s and women’s wrestling teams will take the mat against the Colorado Mesa Mavericks, of Grand Junction, Colorado, at 5:30 p.m. today for the final home dual of the season.
