Softball swept up in Lakewood, Colorado

By Eben Rosentrater – Sports Editor

The CSC softball team found themselves on the wrong side of a four-game sweep this weekend on the road against the Colorado Christian Cougars, of Lakewood, Colorado.

The Eagles had a rough weekend with the task laid ahead of them.

Saturday’s first game against the Cougars was an offensive and defensive nightmare for the Eagles.

Colorado Christian took full advantage of this fact and scored a run in all but two innings of the contest. On the other hand, the Eagles were unable to do any scoring at all.

The only Eagle hits came from shortstop Bailey Steinke, senior of Lakewood, Colorado, who was able to land two hits in her three total at-bats.

CSC third basewoman Sloane Quijas, senior of Erie, landed on base as well after being walked by the Cougar pitcher.

However, none of the Eagles were able to find home plate, ending the game in a 0-8 mercy rule lost in the sixth inning.

The second game of the Saturday double header was by far the Eagles best defensive game of the weekend.

The score stayed stagnant for most of the game. It was 0-0 until the fifth inning when the Cougars, with two on base, landed a double and scored two RBIs.

In the same inning, a fielder’s choice allowed another Cougar base runner to score at the sacrifice of an out.

CCU capped off the day with a home run, winning the game 4-0.

Sunday’s first game was the Eagles best game offensively and was the only game of the weekend the Eagles were able to find home plate.

CSC pinch hitter Paige Edwards, sophomore of Firestone, Colorado, grounded out at third base, but was able to bat Jaelyn Martinez-Lewis in for an RBI and the Eagles’ first score of the weekend.

In the fifth inning, Lauren Zimmerman, sophomore of Reno, Nevada, ripped an RBI single to left field, allowing Steinke to score.

In the following at-bat, Ashland Baca, freshman of Pueblo West, Colorado, RBI singled another to left field, allowing Quijas score a run.

With score 3-5 in the fifth, the Cougars went on a three-point run in the sixth, winning the game 8-3.

The final game of the weekend ended the same way as the first with the Eagles losing 8-0 again.

The Eagles return to the diamond when the travel to Denver to take on Regis University Rangers on Saturday and Sunday.
