Campbell takes 133 lbs NCAA runner-up

By Bre Benson

The CSC men’s wrestling team concluded their season this past Sunday in Cedar Rapid, Iowa, at the NCAA Division II National Championships on March 10.

Chadron State was represented by three wrestlers who were all named first team all-RMAC  and finished 20th as a team at the national meet.

Quentrevion Campbell, 133lb, redshirt junior of Tifton, Georgia, wrestled his way into the championship match where he lost 3-2 by a matter of seconds to Gavin Quiocho, a sophomore at Glenville State College.

Campbell finished his season 20-2.

“I can’t complain,” Campbell said, “and I enjoyed myself from winning close matches to doing big throws. It was exciting.”

Chadron has not seen a season as successful as this one since current head coach Brett Hunter won a national title for CSC in 2009.

Keegan Gehlhausen, 184lb, redshirt freshman of Pinedale, Wyoming, was named the RMAC Freshman of the Year.

Gelhausen made it to the quarter finals but lost 8-6 to Ty McGeary, junior at West Liberty University. McGeary went on to win the 184lb national title.

Chadron’s heavyweight, Mason Watt lost 10-1 in the first round to Francesco Borsellino, graduate student also at West Liberty.

Watt was supposed to hang up his shoes at the end of this season, however in an email, he announced that he will be returning for a sixth year.

With a chip on his shoulder and feeling like he had let CSC down, Watt said, “I felt as if nationals was a stepping-stone for me. I didn’t perform the way I wanted, and it really puts this pit in my stomach.”

“I think next year’s team is going to be unstoppable. Don’t be surprised when we are a top five team in the nation because that’s what we are going to do.”
